Hello, everyone! I’m Erin Brophey, Principal Oboe of the Saskatoon Symphony and a sessional lecturer at the University of Saskatchewan. I also direct a programme called The Oboe Path, designed to help oboists play with joy and ease through a blend of group online masterclasses, personalized plans, and one-on-one feedback. This programme ensures that oboists make the most of their practice time, stay motivated, and become the kind of musicians everyone wants to play with.
Today, I want to share some insights on five common mistakes that oboists often make and how to avoid them. These pitfalls can hinder progress and impact performance, so let’s dive into each one and explore how to overcome them.
Mistake 1: Blaming Reeds
It’s a common tendency among oboists to blame their reeds for any playing deficiencies. While good reeds are indeed crucial, attributing every issue to the reed can be problematic. Often, the root of the problem lies in the player’s technique or flexibility. Rather than solely blaming the reed, focus on improving your own playing skills. Regular practice and attention to technique can address many issues that might otherwise seem like reed problems.
Mistake 2: Procuring and Caring for the Right Oboe
Many students hold on to beginner oboes for too long. These instruments often lack essential keys, such as the left-hand F and articulated C-sharp key, which are important for developing advanced techniques. Investing in a higher-quality oboe with these keys will support your progress. Additionally, proper maintenance is key. Regular check-ups by a certified oboe technician, rather than a general music store repair person, will prevent long-term issues and ensure your oboe performs optimally.
Mistake 3: Neglecting Fundamentals
Focusing solely on advanced techniques while neglecting the basics is another common mistake. It’s crucial to work on fundamentals such as pitch, dynamic range, and musical phrasing. Many players may excel in technique but lack artistry and dynamic expression. Paying attention to these basics will enhance your overall performance and help you develop a more complete musicality.
Mistake 4: Sourcing Good Handmade Reeds
Using quality handmade reeds can significantly improve playing consistency. Mass-produced reeds often fall short in quality compared to those made by skilled professionals. Thanks to the internet, finding a talented reed maker is easier than ever. Investing in high-quality reeds will enhance your oboe player's playing experience and contribute to better performance.
Mistake 5: Starting Reed Making Too Early
Jumping into reed making too early can be a mistake. While initial reed making workshops are beneficial, serious reed making should come after solidifying playing fundamentals. If you’re still struggling with basic techniques, focusing on reed making can lead to frustration, as it can’t compensate for fundamental playing issues. Ensure you’ve mastered scales and technique before delving deeply into reed making.
As a professional oboe player, I’ve faced these challenges myself. Reed making is a valuable skill that allows us to adapt to different conditions and personal needs, but it requires balance with strong playing fundamentals to truly excel.
I hope these insights help you avoid common mistakes and improve your oboe playing. Remember to play with joy and ease, and strive to become the oboist everyone wants to play with. Take care!
