Hello, everyone! I’m Erin Brophey, principal oboe player with the Saskatoon Symphony and a sessional lecturer at the University of Saskatchewan. Today, I’m excited to share some valuable insights with you, especially if you’re a parent of an oboe player. Whether your child is just starting out or has been playing for a while, these tips will help support their journey with this unique and beautiful instrument.
When I first began learning the oboe, I lived in a remote part of northern Canada, far from the resources that would have made my learning experience easier. It was a challenging path, but it’s the reason I’m so passionate about helping others navigate their own oboe journey with better information and support. That’s why I’ve created The Oboe Path, an online program designed to provide customized education, one-on-one feedback, and group masterclasses to help oboe players improve quickly and effectively.
So, if you’re raising an oboe player or are involved in their musical journey, congratulations! Oboe players are special—they’re quirky, intelligent, and unique. Here are seven tips to help make their experience a little smoother and more enjoyable.
Tip 1: Source Good Reeds
One of the most important factors in an oboist’s success is having high-quality reeds. Unfortunately, good oboe reeds are hard to come by at your local music store. Most professional oboists make their own reeds because of how delicate they are—the end of an oboe reed is as thin as a human hair, making it extremely sensitive to humidity, altitude, and temperature changes. If your child is struggling with their reeds, sourcing handmade, high-quality reeds can make a world of difference.
Tip 2: Understand Reeds
Reeds are finicky, and it’s not uncommon for them to work perfectly one day and fail the next. Your oboe player isn’t imagining things—reeds can change quickly due to various environmental factors. Learning how to adjust reeds is a crucial skill for any oboist. Encourage your child to develop this skill, as it will greatly enhance their playing experience.
Tip 3: Find a Good Instrument
A well-functioning oboe is essential for your child’s success. Unfortunately, student oboes provided by band programs often lack important keys, which can hinder your child’s progress. If possible, invest in an oboe that has all the necessary keys so your child can learn the correct fingerings from the start. A good instrument will make playing easier and more enjoyable.
Tip 4: Choose the Right Oboe
When it comes to selecting an oboe, you’ll need to decide between a plastic or wooden instrument. Wooden oboes produce a warmer sound, but they’re also more prone to cracking, especially in extreme temperature changes. Plastic oboes are more durable and can be a great option for beginners who are still learning how to care for their instrument.
Tip 5: Find a Good Teacher
Having a skilled and experienced teacher can make a significant difference in your child’s oboe journey. A professional oboist who performs regularly will be able to provide valuable guidance, including how to make small adjustments to the instrument for optimal performance. A good teacher can also inspire and motivate your child, helping them to stay committed to their practice.
Tip 6: Regular Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for keeping an oboe in top playing condition. Make sure your child’s oboe is serviced by a reputable oboe repair specialist at least once a year. General woodwind technicians may not have the expertise needed for oboes, so it’s important to find someone who specializes in this delicate instrument.
Tip 7: Provide Support
Learning the oboe can be a frustrating process, especially given the challenges of dealing with reeds and the instrument’s finicky nature. Your support and understanding can make a big difference in your child’s experience. Encourage them to embrace the flexibility and resilience required to play the oboe, and remind them that persistence will pay off in the long run.
I hope these tips help you support the oboe player in your life.
